Jake Bern was born in Oakland, California, and raised in the infamous city of Berkeley, California. His father is a librarian, his stepmother a therapist (his mother, sadly, passed away in his infancy). Jake was fortunate enough however to live right next door to his grandparents, Howard and Estelle Bern, the former fluent in over seven languages and a hell of a card player; the latter still an active member of the Black Panthers (city of Berkeley...need we say more?), and the proud owner of the best matzo ball soup recipe this side of Brooklyn Heights.
Jake found his love for acting at the age of fourteen when he stopped growing, and realized that a professional basketball career was out of the question. His inspiration as a artist comes from his experiences as a child at Camp Winnarainbow, Wavy Gravy’s performing arts camp, where he learned to improvise, juggle, and talk in funny voices. After spending his teens doing regional theater and independent films throughout the Bay Area, Jake got accepted to Tisch Acting School at NYU, DePaul, and UCLA. His grandparents made it quite clear that unless he had a credit card, UCLA was the appropriate choice. Jake had no credit, and so took the 580 to the I-5 to the 405, got off at Sunset Blvd., and the rest is history.
Jake holds a BA in Theater Arts from UCLA's School of Theater, Film, and Television, and has been working steadily in all three fields for the last four years. He graduated with the second highest GPA in his school--the person with the highest smartly became a movie producer instead of an actor and lives somewhere in Beverly Hills--and Jake also was the recipient of numerous acting awards, including the prestigious Dean’s Advisory Board Award for Acting. Also, he graduated with no credit card debt, which is probably what his grandparents are most proud of him for (although watching Jake on television ain’t half bad either). Currently, he lives in Beachwood Canyon, California, pretty far away from Beverly Hills and that movie producer who had a higher GPA than him, but close to some really killer dog parks.
